Can glaucoma patients drink water?

Xiao Li is a young man who loves sports and likes to drink heavily after strenuous exercise, which he feels is a thing that quenches his thirst and quenches his fatigue and makes him feel comfortable. One day, after playing basketball with colleagues, Xiao Li drank several bottles of water in one gulp. After a while, he felt discomfort in his eyes with a vague headache and went to the hospital in the company of his colleagues. After a series of examinations, the doctor found that Xiao Li was suffering from open-angle glaucoma, and that the large amount of water had induced an acute increase in intraocular pressure, which made him feel the swelling of his eyes and required immediate treatment. Xiao Li felt very confused, feeling that he is usually very healthy and has good vision, why would he suffer from glaucoma? The doctor patiently explained the onset and characteristics of open-angle glaucoma to Xiao Li: open-angle glaucoma is insidious, and is more common in people with a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes, and excessive eye use. If the patient feels it before going to the doctor, it is often advanced glaucoma. Although the acute increase in IOP due to excessive drinking aggravated the development of the disease, it led to the diagnosis of glaucoma, otherwise, Li might not have thought he had an eye disease and would have been delayed for a long time. So can patients with glaucoma drink water? We always hear that it is very healthy to keep drinking 8 glasses of water every day. However, Xiao Li experienced elevated intraocular pressure and headache after drinking a large amount of water at once. The reason for this is that Xiao Li drank water quickly and in large amounts, resulting in rapid blood dilution, resulting in a decrease in blood osmotic pressure and an increase in the atrial fluid entering the eye to maintain intraocular pressure, causing an increase in intraocular pressure, which can often be accompanied by headaches in acute IOP. Therefore, glaucoma patients should not drink a lot of water at one time. If they drink 300 or 500 ml of water in one gulp, the IOP is likely to rise. If a glaucoma patient has this habit, the IOP will fluctuate back and forth from high to low every day, and the optic nerve at the base of the eye will be subjected to such pressure fluctuations, which will cause damage to the optic nerve. How do patients with glaucoma drink water? The principle is: a small amount of water, many times, interval drinking. 500 ml of water the same amount of drinking, if it is 3 times, 5 times, in the middle of the interval drinking finished, will not have an impact on the eye pressure. After listening to these explanations, Xiao Li gradually had some knowledge of glaucoma, and learned the impact of drinking a lot of water at one time on intraocular pressure, Xiao Li was very worried. 2, drink less strong tea, coffee and eat spicy and other stimulating food. As these things can make the vascular nerve regulating center disorder, resulting in canal diastolic dysfunction, so that the eye pressure increases, aggravating the disease. 3, avoid staying in the dark environment for a long time. It is not advisable to stay in a dark room for a long time, otherwise the pupil will be dilated and the intraocular pressure will be increased. 4.Ensure blood flow back to the circuit. Clothing should be loose and pillows should be cushioned during sleep to facilitate blood flow back and lower IOP.
