Is silicone rhinoplasty obsolete? How does it work?

Since the reform and opening up, cosmetic surgery in China has flourished, with the most performed procedures being double eyelids, rhinoplasty and eye bags. Since most Asians have low and flat nasal bridges, nasal surgery is often done to elevate the nose, and the materials chosen are safe, hard and affordable solid silicone. Decades of data have proven that silicone materials do stand the test of time and maintain form well as well as have a very good safety profile. As a result, silicone is still, by far, one of the preferred artificial materials for plastic surgery. Undeniably, for some patients, such as those with very thin skin, low nasal bridge with exceptionally tight skin, severe saddle nose, and severe pilonidal nose, simple silicone implants are indeed not good indications. However, for most patients with good underlying conditions, simple silicone rhinoplasty or a combination of autologous dermal and fascial tissues, combined with cartilage grafts, is still the preferred method. Simple rhinoplasty is not obsolete, this method is not only simple, safe, inexpensive, and can be repeated several times, but also, the results are not inferior to the comprehensive rhinoplasty with rib cartilage. Of course, the prerequisite is to find an excellent plastic surgeon and make a scientific and reasonable judgment.
