Can Ovulation Tests Measure Progesterone

Ovulation test strips cannot measure progesterone. Ovulation test strips are used to help women determine whether they are ovulating by detecting luteinizing hormone, which is a component of luteinizing hormone, not progesterone, so ovulation test strips can’t detect progesterone. When a woman is close to ovulation, her luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone peak, thus stimulating the follicle to ovulate. Continuous testing of ovulation test strips, if the color band changes and deepens, it suggests that ovulation has occurred. Progesterone testing requires a blood draw, and there is currently no effective way to test for progesterone through test strips. Women who have regular menstrual periods can check the baseline state of ovarian function from the second to fourth day of menstruation, or from the twenty-second to twenty-fourth day of menstruation if the test is for luteal function. It is recommended to consult a specialist for progesterone testing to determine the timing of the test.
