Yin Chen root is not a traditional Chinese medicine, and has no special efficacy and effect, usually and above ground part of the medicine, known as Yin Chen, has the effect of retiring yellow bile and so on. The root is the root of Asteraceae plant Artemisia or Artemisia capillaris, and the dried above-ground part of this plant is the Chinese herbal medicine Yin Chen recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Yin Chen has the effect of relieving yellow and bile, clearing dampness and heat, and is suitable for jaundice with little urine, wet sores and itching, dampness and warmth (warmth caused by feeling dampness and heat) and summer dampness. In the “Treatise on Typhoid Fever”, it is paired with gardenia and rhubarb to treat typhoid fever for eight or nine days, dysuria (unsmooth urination), abdominal fullness, and a yellow body like the color of oranges. This medicine can also be made into Chinese medicines such as Yin Lian Qing Liver Combination, Yin Chen Wu Ling Pills, Yin Gardenia Huang Oral Liquid and so on.
