Nasopharyngeal cancer sequelae

NPC is sensitive to radiotherapy, and radiation therapy is the main treatment for nasopharyngeal caries, otitis media, radioactive brain damage, facial numbness and other sequelae will occur after radiation, and the manifestations of each type of sequelae are different, mainly the following differences: 1. Under such stimulation, dental caries can be easily formed; 2. Radioactive otitis media: When radiation treatment is applied to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, most of the ear structures are inevitably irradiated, causing otitis media and other ear symptoms, resulting in hearing loss, which is a common sequela after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma; 3. After radiation, symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, even limb movement disorder, cognitive impairment and intellectual decline may occur; 4. Facial numbness: Facial numbness is a common manifestation of cranial nerve damage after radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and the symptoms of numbness will still persist after treatment. After radiation therapy, patients may also suffer from sequelae such as skin scarring, difficulty in opening mouth and dryness of oropharynx. If patients are treated by surgery, they may have sequelae such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage, headache, sore throat, earache, dyspnea, postnasal drip, and swallowing discomfort after surgery. For nasopharyngeal cancer sequelae, nebulizer inhalation and medication can be used to relieve the discomfort. In addition, patients with nasopharyngeal cancer may also suffer from numbness of limbs and poor bone marrow hematopoiesis after chemotherapy.
