Sanyinjiao has a role to play in inducing labor. Sanyinjiao is located on the inner side of the lower leg, 3 inches above the tip of the inner ankle, behind the medial edge of the tibia, and has the effect of tonifying the spleen and kidney, strengthening qi and blood, and is mainly used for treating digestive disorders, such as intestinal tinnitus and abdominal distension, diarrhea, and hernia; gynecological disorders, such as irregular menstruation, excessive bandage, infertility, and stagnant labor; and men’s disorders, such as spermatorrhea, impotence, and urinary loss. Sanyinjiao with Hegu is effective in relieving stagnant labor caused by deficiency of the spleen and kidney and insufficiency of qi and blood, and is often used as an adjunctive therapy to improve weak uterine contractions during labor. It is contraindicated for pregnant women below 37 weeks of gestation and for those who cannot tolerate needling. Sanyinjiao is often used in conjunction with Hegu acupoints as an adjunctive treatment for stagnant labor. The operation should be carried out by a professional acupuncturist, and never by a person without medical qualification, in order to avoid adverse consequences.
