If there is pain on pressure on the upper ribs of the chest, accompanied by pain after activity, arm extension, deep breathing, or coughing, it is most often costochondritis or rib neuralgia. If a rash develops, it may also be herpes zoster. It is best to go to the hospital for a CT or radiograph of the chest and lungs to rule out any fractures or diseases, and to treat the pain with pain-relieving medication after a clear diagnosis. In addition, other organic diseases such as coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, pleurisy, pneumonia, lung cancer, reflux esophagitis, or functional diseases such as neurosis should be excluded.
