Most patients who have had thyroid surgery can have their drains removed in three days after surgery. When drains are placed after surgery, they are usually placed bilaterally when a malignant thyroid tumor has been done and a cervical contouring has been performed, in case there is active bleeding under the neck causing a hematoma, which can compress the trachea and cause difficulty in swallowing, and a small amount of bloody exudate can enter the drains at an early stage. However, as long as the surgical ligation is complete and the entire operative area is small, the drainage will soon be clean, and early removal will also allow the drainage port to grow without delay and reduce the possibility of postoperative scar formation.
