What’s wrong with chronic mouth ulcers?

Long-term mouth ulcers are also divided into types, and the most common is recurrent mouth ulcers. During an attack, the mucous membrane in the mouth is necrotic and ulcers are formed, and the larger the ulcerated spot is, the more painful it is, but it is self-limiting and can heal naturally in about 7 to 10 days. Ulcers can appear in any part of the mucous membrane, usually occurring in the buccal mucosa, tongue and mouth and lips where there is frequent movement, so the pain is very obvious during the attack, plus constant recurrence, which can have a great impact on the patient’s work and life. Chronic mouth ulcers can occur throughout the year, but patients are particularly common in the summer. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, emotions, sleep, and poor diet are all factors in the prevalence of mouth ulcers. In the summer heat, people are easily irritable and agitated, which leads to poor appetite and sleep disturbance, either sleepless or easily awake. These physical disorders can easily trigger mouth ulcers, so every summer mouth ulcers will be concentrated. Many people have the illusion that long-term mouth ulcers are an inflammatory lesion, and it doesn’t matter if they go to the hospital or not, they will naturally get better if they take some anti-inflammatory drugs. But among the many mouth ulcers, there are a few that do not belong to recurrent mouth ulcers, including tuberculous ulcers, syphilitic ulcers, etc., and they do not heal on their own. Even some oral ulcers are early manifestations of certain malignant tumors such as tongue cancer, gum cancer, and buccal mucosa cancer at the beginning. If these ulcers are neglected or treated as inflammation with their own “experience”, they are bound to delay the disease and accelerate the spread, with unimaginable consequences. In fact, it is easy to distinguish the recurrent ulcers that are commonly seen in daily life from the tumor-induced oral ulcers. The former is round in shape, soft to the touch, recurrent, and usually heals in a week or so. The latter has an irregular shape and hard lumps can be felt around and at the base of the ulcer. The pain is not obvious in the early stage, but the development is very rapid and cannot be cured for a long time. In addition, long-term mouth ulcers may become cancerous over time due to the frequent stimulation of chewing and talking. That is, those parts in contact with the teeth, due to the patient’s reluctance to remove the remaining broken teeth or improperly made dentures, the sharp edges are constantly irritated and scrape the mucosa to produce ulcers. If the stimulus is not removed, the ulcer will not heal but will only get worse. This kind of ulcer that does not heal over time is a kind of precancerous lesion, which is very easy to become cancerous.
