Glaucoma is often referred to as the “thief of light” because it is a common disease that causes blindness. In fact, with standard treatment, most glaucoma can be well controlled and will not have a serious impact on life. On the occasion of World Glaucoma Day on March 6, three major principles of glaucoma prevention and treatment should be emphasized. First, do not believe in rumors. The cause of glaucoma is not very clear at present, some patients privately communicate the so-called “prevention tips”, such as “turn your eyes”, “drink less water”, “drink more alcohol” and so on. The so-called “prevention tips” privately exchanged by some patients, such as “roll your eyes”, “drink less water”, “drink more alcohol”, etc., not only do not play any role in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma, but also may cause other problems. 2. Secondly, the follow-up should be actively cooperated with the doctor. Glaucoma diagnosis and follow-up requires a lot of long-term examinations, some of which are frequent, such as intraocular pressure examination, and some patients may become intimidated and even give up treatment. Some tests require close cooperation from the patient, such as visual field examinations. If the patient is distracted during the examination, the results obtained will not only have low reference value, but sometimes even affect the choice of treatment. Other tests can directly reflect the progress of the disease, if the patient is not willing to face the reality, negative treatment, it is difficult for the doctor to modify the treatment plan in a timely manner, but also delay the disease. 3, the last point, the drugs used to do a good job. Many glaucoma patients have to use drugs for life, and some may use 3 to 5 kinds at the same time, so it is important to master the characteristics of these eye drops. Suvastan eye drops are generally only used once at night; twice-daily Betagen eye drops have a very poor effect on lowering IOP at night and are generally not used at bedtime. Some patients use exactly the same medication in both eyes, while some patients, because the condition of both eyes are in different stages, the point of the drops differ, and may even one eye point dilating medicine, the other eye point pupil reduction medicine, its effect is the opposite, the patient if inadvertently point the wrong eye, may lead to serious consequences. Some drugs can be used for a long time, and some have to be changed temporarily for a few months. For example, timolol eye drops may become less effective after a certain period of use and need to be stopped for a while before resuming use. These rules, although slightly complicated, are what glaucoma patients must keep in mind, not only to remember the names of the different drugs, the way they are used, but also to know their toxic side effects.
