Formulation of Chai Hu Shu Hepatosan

The formula of Chai Hu Shuo Liver Essence is Chen Pi (stir-fried in vinegar), Chai Hu, Chuan Xiong, Xiang Fu, Citrus Aurantium (stir-fried in bran), Paeonia Lactiflora, and Glycyrrhiza Uralensis (roasted). Chai Hu Shuo Liver Essence is effective in dispersing liver qi (regulating stagnation of liver qi), activating blood circulation and relieving pain (relieving pain by removing blood stasis). It is indicated for treating the symptoms of Liver-Qi stagnation (the lack of smooth flow of Liver-Qi). Symptoms include pain in the ribs and wounds, tightness in the chest, depression and irritability, belching (hiccups), distension and fullness in the epigastrium (abdomen), and a stringy pulse. This formula is often used in treating chronic hepatitis, chronic gastritis, intercostal neuralgia, etc., which are caused by liver depression and stagnation of qi (poor transportation of qi and blood in the liver, and depression of mood). This formula is aromatic, pungent and dry, easily depleting Qi and injuring Yin, and should not be taken for a long time. If this formula is to be taken, it is recommended that the patient be guided by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to standardize the use of medication, and not to blindly self-medicate, so as not to cause delay in the treatment of the condition.
