Most women experience a rupture of the hymen the first time they have sex, and the process of hymen rupture is painful. This, combined with the fact that the woman’s vagina is relatively tight and dry the first time she has sex, can easily cause pain. In addition, some women have different levels of hymen, so the degree of pain during hymen rupture varies. Women with a thicker hymen are more painful; women with a thinner hymen or a more relaxed vagina may experience a hymen rupture during their first sexual intercourse, but some women feel no pain.
