Why you can’t have general anesthesia after eating

If the body eats before the general anesthesia surgery, it will easily lead to the retention of food residues in the gastrointestinal tract of the body, and then during the anesthesia process, if the patient regurgitates the contents of the gastrointestinal tract due to nausea, vomiting, etc., which will cause choking and coughing in the trachea, which will easily cause asphyxia and seriously endanger life. 2. If the patient eats food before general anesthesia, it may lead to increased burden on the peristaltic function of the gastrointestinal tract, and the peristaltic movement of the gastrointestinal tract is slow during anesthesia, which may lead to the retention of food residues in the gastrointestinal tract, causing abdominal distension and abdominal pain, so before the general anesthesia surgery, the patient needs to be routinely instructed to prohibit diet and water, 8 hours before surgery and 6 hours before surgery. After the surgery, the patient needs to gradually transition from a liquid diet to a normal diet according to the patient’s recovery.
