What Corticosteroids Do

Corticosteroids are mainly categorized into glucocorticoids, saline corticosteroids and sex hormones, which are immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, anti-shock, regulating water-salt balance and hormone supplementation therapy, etc. 1. Glucocorticoid its role includes immunosuppression, anti-inflammatory, anti-shock and so on. It is suitable for asthma, rheumatic immune system diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, rescue of patients with toxic shock. Contraindications: allergic patients, patients with a history of psychosis, active peptic ulcer, fungal infections, severe hypertension, etc.. Adverse reactions mainly include Cushing’s syndrome, induced or aggravated peptic ulcer, withdrawal reaction. 2. The most important role of saline corticosteroid is to regulate water-salt balance, and the representative hormone is aldosterone. Contraindications: contraindicated in patients with hypokalemia. Adverse reactions mainly include water-sodium retention causing the body to develop edema, ascites, hypokalemia and so on. 3. Sex hormones: including estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen can be used for contraception, perimenopausal syndrome, breast cancer treatment. Progesterone is often used in combination with estrogen to establish an artificial menstrual cycle and to treat dysfunctional uterine bleeding, endometriosis and dysmenorrhea. Irregular vaginal bleeding, amenorrhea, drowsiness, and frequent urination can occur with estrogen use; it is contraindicated in those known or suspected to have breast cancer and those with estrogen-dependent tumors. Adverse effects of progestins include gastrointestinal reactions, poor gastric appetite, acne, fluid retention and edema, weight gain, and allergic skin inflammation. It is contraindicated in people with cardiovascular disease and hypertension, liver and kidney impairment, diabetics, asthmatics and others.
