Manifestations of neonatal hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism in newborns can have very serious consequences, so infants should be screened for thyroid function after birth and subsequently remedied through clinical observation. Children found to have hypothyroidism should be treated promptly. The manifestations of hypothyroidism in newborns are as follows: 1. early stage: the child may show non-specific manifestations such as refusal to eat, low activity, delayed remission of jaundice, abnormal body temperature and rough skin; 2. late stage: the child may show specific manifestations such as large tongue, special facial features and mental retardation.
