According to the latest data released by Shanghai Center for Disease Control, the 5-year survival rate of new colorectal cancer in Shanghai from 2002 to 2007 is 42%, while the 5-year survival rate of new colorectal cancer in the United States from 2002 to 2007 is 63%. From the above data, we found an amazing fact that the difference of 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer in Shanghai is as much as 20% compared with that in the United States. What is the reason? To analyze the technical level, the difference between Shanghai and the United States in terms of hardware and equipment is very small, and theoretically there should not be such a difference in the diagnosis and treatment technology of colorectal cancer. First of all, we found that there is a difference in the proportion of early colorectal cancer detection between the two places. The percentage of early-stage colorectal cancer in the United States is nearly 20%, while the percentage in Shanghai is less than 10%. The 5-year survival rate of early colorectal cancer is then over 90%. This is an important aspect of the gap. Therefore, to continue to increase the screening of early colorectal cancer and improve the national awareness of colorectal cancer early warning is the top priority for professionals engaged in colorectal cancer. Secondly, the irregularity of treatment is also an important reason for the gap in prognosis. One of the keys to the prognosis of colorectal cancer is surgical resection, and the surgeon’s factor is an important factor in determining the survival rate of patients, which has been confirmed by research. Therefore, how to treat colorectal cancer strictly according to the norms and standards, such as mastering the indications for surgery and operating the surgical clock strictly according to the standards of radical surgery. Postoperative adjuvant treatment and follow-up strictly according to the pathological stage are the key points to improve patients’ prognosis. In fact, with the current technology, timely occurrence of liver metastasis, surgical operation supplemented with appropriate treatment measures can significantly improve the survival rate of colorectal cancer. Another reason is the national perception. A considerable number of patients who did not receive surgical treatment refused surgery because they or their family members refused surgery, some of them refused surgery because of their age and high risk of surgery. Last year, I performed radical surgery for rectal cancer on a 92-year-old man, and the prognosis was very good. Some people think that having cancer is a terminal disease and both treatment and non-treatment are the way to death. In fact, this is totally wrong. It can be said that if timely and standardized treatment is given, colorectal cancer is a kind of tumor with very good treatment effect, and it is also a kind of disease that can be completely cured.
