What causes pain at the back of the tongue?

The pain at the back of the tongue may be caused by inflammation of the tonsils, or it may be caused by chronic pharyngitis, inflammation of the tongue papillae, or dental disorders.
1. Tonsillitis: Cold and fever caused by bacterial or viral infection may induce tonsillitis. Tonsillitis can also spread and diffuse into the soft tissues at the back of the tongue, causing tugging pain at the back of the tongue.
2. Chronic pharyngitis: Inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, allergies, or environmental stimuli such as harmful gases can cause chronic pharyngitis. The long-term stimulation of chronic pharyngitis can also lead to lymphoid follicle hyperplasia at the back of the tongue, causing pain at the back of the tongue.
3. Inflammation of tongue papillae: the contour papillae are distributed in the root of tongue, when oral hygiene is poor, there are bacteria or viral infections in the oral cavity, it will also cause inflammation of contour papillae, causing redness, swelling and pain in the contour papillae at the root of the tongue, resulting in pain at the back of the tongue.
4. Dental diseases: If there are dental diseases in the mouth, such as pulpitis, periapical periodontitis, periodontal abscess of the back teeth of the lower jaw, or pericoronitis of the wisdom teeth, the inflammation will spread to the root of the tongue, causing pain at the back of the tongue.
