A positive H. pylori test result indicates the presence of H. pylori infection in the stomach, although it depends on the test method chosen by the patient. If the test is a venous blood test for H. pylori antibodies, it may indicate a previous H. pylori infection, but not necessarily a current HP infection, which means that it is not very accurate. If the patient chooses to have a urea breath test or rapid urease assay, the test is highly accurate, indicating the presence of a current HP infection. At this point the patient needs to consult a gastroenterologist and needs to be given medication to eradicate H. pylori as appropriate under the guidance of a specialist, who needs to be consulted for specific medications and precautions.
