Based on calories, we classify foods as “green light foods” that must be consumed every day, “yellow light foods” that require limited intake, and “red light foods” that can only be consumed occasionally.
Green light food: contains essential nutrients to promote health, and is a must-have food for daily intake.
Milk: low-fat milk, skim milk, yogurt, low-fat cheese.
Eggs: steamed eggs, poached eggs, tea eggs, brined eggs.
Soy products: soy milk, cold tofu, dried marinated beans.
Seafood: steamed or boiled fresh fish and seafood.
Meat: steamed, marinated, stewed, grilled or boiled lean meat.
Staple foods: rice, steamed buns, noodles in soup, baked groundnuts or potatoes, boiled corn or rhizome, low-sugar red bean soup, mung bean soup or lotus seed soup.
Vegetables: Stir-fried vegetables with less oil, lettuce, kimchi.
Fruits: fresh fruits, fresh juices.
Yellow light foods: contain essential nutrients, but too much sugar, fat or salt, and are foods that must be limited
Milk: full fat milk, flavored milk, milk shakes, ice cream
Eggs: skin eggs, salted eggs, scrambled eggs, fried eggs
Soy products: deep-fried soy products, such as tofu in oil
Seafood: fried, deep-fried or stir-fried fish or seafood, canned fish, fish pine
Meat: fried, stir-fried or deep-fried lean meat and poultry, canned meat, meat loaf, Western ham, hot dogs, plum meat
Staple food category: fried rice, fried noodles, fried rice noodles, sweet and salty bread, rice cakes
Vegetables: stir-fried green vegetables in large oil, fried vegetables
Fruits: fruit salad, canned fruit.
Others: burgers, pizza, rice nuts (with sugar coating or powdered sugar on the outer layer)
Red-light foods: foods that provide only calories, sugar, fats and salt, and contain few other nutrients, and can be chosen only occasionally
Seafood: salted fish.
Meat: Chinese ham, bacon, sausage, pancetta.
Staple foods: French fries, doughnuts, small pastry, mooncakes, instant noodles, popcorn.
Vegetables: pickled vegetables.
Fruits: preserves, sweet fruit juices.
Fats and oils: those containing a lot of saturated fatty acids (such as lard, cream, pork skin, chicken skin)
Others: cream cakes, candies, chocolates, soft drinks, colas, sugary drinks.
