Why Glaucoma Awareness is Important

Just after the surgery I received a call from a colleague asking me to help show a friend his eyes. It was an elderly gentleman in his seventies. I thought I was the one to confirm the diagnosis, but I was not. The old gentleman knew he had glaucoma 10 years ago, and the doctor prescribed him eye medication, which he took every day at home for 10 years, but recently his vision in one eye was getting worse and worse, and he couldn’t even count on his fingers, so he came to see what was wrong. After examination, I found that most of the optic nerve in his eye had atrophied, and there was no possibility of recovery. How many patients are like him? Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be controlled or at least slowed down. The IOP and visual field should be monitored regularly and the treatment plan should be adjusted. Eye drops are not a panacea, they may not work, or they may need to be adjusted as the disease worsens. I hope the majority of glaucoma patients can know this ah.
