Many Parkinson’s patients ask me, “What should we pay attention to in our daily lives besides medication and surgical treatment?” It is evident that there is a lack of a proper guiding behavior code for most Parkinson’s patients in their daily life. The following is a summary of some of the characteristics of Parkinson’s patients that I know and understand, and some of the issues that should be noted in their behavior and diet, for reference only. In terms of diet, Parkinson’s patients should stagger the time between taking medication and eating, taking medication before meals is better absorbed and the effect lasts longer. Especially dairy products must not be taken at the same time as the drug. It is better to stagger them by more than 3 hours. In terms of behavior and activities, I still recommend that Parkinson’s patients exercise or participate in certain household chores as much as they can to help improve their condition. Of course, the premise is not to overexert yourself, pay attention to safety, avoid collisions and falls. For some people with advanced Parkinson’s disease, they have difficulty starting and turning, which increases the risk of falling, especially in places with uneven ground. Therefore, exercising the patient to walk the right way can reduce the chance of a fall injury. This means having the patient start by lifting the foot as if crossing a threshold and then walking with a normal gait. Also, I have advised patients to tape the floor at home in the shape of a ladder, for example, from the bedroom to the bathroom. Having the patient follow this spacing significantly reduces the chance of a fall. Finally, a very few patients have asked me why they can’t keep their eyes open. I can tell you a tip. Putting a rubber band around the head, like a hair band, might improve this symptom. You might want to try it. These are just some of the things I can think of that Parkinson’s patients need to be aware of in their daily lives and some tips for living with Parkinson’s. If there is more to come, I will keep updating it.
