Why do you lie flat on your back for 6 hours after lumbar anesthesia with the pillow removed?

The purpose of going to the pillow and lying flat for six hours after lumbar anesthesia is to prevent the occurrence of hypocranial pressure headache, so the pillow should not be used for six hours after surgery. A certain amount of cerebrospinal fluid needs to be released before lumbar anesthesia, and the release of cerebrospinal fluid will lower the intracranial pressure in the skull. When the patient returns to the ward after surgery to pillow, it can cause postoperative headache symptoms because the intracranial pressure has not fully returned to its normal state, and the decrease in intracranial pressure leads to a decrease in intracranial pressure, resulting in headache symptoms. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced through the choroid plexus in the ventricles, and it usually takes 6-8 hours to maintain a normal state. Therefore, pillows should not be used during this period mainly because of the prevention of hypocranial pressure headaches.
