Herbs for treating undigested food accumulation after eating too much include hawthorn, Liuxinqu and malt. Hawthorn is effective in eliminating food and strengthening the stomach, resolving turbidity and lowering fat (cleansing the body of impurities and reducing excess body fat), and promoting circulation of Qi and dispersing blood stasis. It is mainly used for treating stagnation of meat and food, stomach and epigastric distension, abdominal pain and diarrhea, dysentery and abdominal pain, hernia pain, dysmenorrhea, and post-partum stasis and pain. However, it should be used with caution in patients with weak spleen and stomach without stagnation and excessive gastric acid secretion. Liushenqu, with its efficacy of eliminating food and harmonizing the stomach, is mainly used in the treatment of hypophagia (lack of appetite and reduced food intake), intestinal tinnitus and diarrhea, food stagnation (stagnation of indigested food in the stomach), and epigastric (distention and fullness in the stomach and abdomen). The adverse effects and contraindications of Liu Shen Qu are not clear. Malt has the efficacy of promoting the flow of qi, eliminating food, strengthening the spleen and opening the stomach, restoring breast milk (so that breast milk will be reduced or no longer secreted) and eliminating flatulence. It is used in treating food stagnation, epigastric distension and pain, deficiency of the spleen with low food intake, milk stagnation, breast distension and pain, weaning of women, liver depression and dystocia (pain in the area of the ribs and coats of arms), and gas pain in the liver and stomach. Malt should not be used by lactating women.
