Cortisolism, also known as Cushing’s syndrome, is a disorder in which the adrenal glands increase the secretion of cortisol for various reasons. It is usually characterized by centripetal obesity, a full moon face, a polycythemic appearance such as thin skin with visible blood vessels, muscle weakness, emotional instability, purple lines on the skin, and a weakened resistance to infections. The disease can be consulted in the endocrinology department. It can be treated by standardizing the use of medications, which are usually based on drugs that block the synthesis of adrenocorticotropic hormones, such as mitotane and metipranolone. For patients who are not well treated with medication, surgical treatment can be chosen. Surgical treatment varies according to the cause of the disease, such as the removal of pituitary microadenomas for pituitary gland lesions, or adrenal adenoma removal for adrenal gland lesions. If cortisolism is suspected, it is recommended to go to a regular hospital to avoid delays.
