What are the methods of hair follicle acquisition?

       There are two main methods to obtain hair follicles: 1. Scalp strip excision method A shuttle-shaped full-layer scalp is excised from my posterior occipital area, and then the incision is directly sutured, and the stitches are removed in 7~14 days after the operation according to the healing of the incision.  The advantages of this method are: small damage area of the scalp, less damage to the hair follicles, short operation time, suitable for all types of hair transplantation, especially for patients who need a large number of hair follicles transplanted; the disadvantage is: there will be thread-like scars in the short term after the operation, but they are usually difficult to be detected under the cover of hair.  This is the most commonly used method to obtain hair follicles and is the most common method we use.  2.Follicular unit extraction method (FUE) The specific method is to cut into the skin along the direction of hair growth with a manual or power-equipped punch with a diameter of 1mm or smaller, rotate and cut a small piece of tissue containing the hair follicle, and then remove the tissue block with small tweezers.  The advantages of this method are: minimal trauma, no sutures in the donor area, rapid healing of the wound, and a very shallow, small, round scar after healing, for patients with high scalp tension who are reluctant to undergo scalp excision.  This method has obvious disadvantages, mainly in the following aspects: (1) it provides limited transplant units and is only suitable for small areas of hair transplant needs; (2) the process of harvesting hair follicles may transect the hair follicles and reduce the survival of the transplanted hairs, and some of the donor area hairs will be lost; (3) the efficiency of hair follicle taking is low and takes a long time.  Therefore, most scholars, including the inventor of this method, believe that FUE can be applied selectively in some cases, but not as a routine procedure. This method is suitable for small areas of scalp hair transplantation.
