The 15-year recurrence rate of stage 0 ductal breast cancer in situ ranges from 2.8% to 9.4% depending on the treatment.
Stage 0 ductal breast cancer in situ is a kind of non-invasive early breast cancer, and most of the patients have a good prognosis after surgical treatment due to the small size of the tumor, no involvement of surrounding organs and tissues, and no metastasis of the cancer cells. However, even after radical surgery, some patients may still experience recurrence within 15 years after surgery, and the specific recurrence rate varies according to the treatment methods of patients.
Clinical data found that patients with stage 0 ductal breast cancer in situ who chose total mastectomy as their treatment had a lower 15-year recurrence rate of about 2.8%, while those who chose to undergo breast preservation surgery but were actively treated with radiation therapy after surgery had a 15-year recurrence rate of about 7.1%.
In contrast, patients who chose to undergo breast-sparing surgery but were not treated with postoperative radiation had a relatively high 15-year recurrence rate of around 9.1%.
Although patients with stage 0 ductal breast cancer in situ still have a certain chance of recurrence after treatment, the overall recurrence rate is not high, and patients are advised to seek medical treatment as early as possible to avoid delaying the disease.
