What Complications to Beware of After a Tooth Extraction

Complications to watch out for after tooth extraction include abnormal bleeding, dry socket, nerve damage, and fracture of the alveolar bone.

1. Abnormal bleeding after tooth extraction: Bleeding in normal people should stop automatically within 5 ~ 15 minutes after tooth extraction. If the bleeding continues after 30 minutes of biting the gauze roll, or if the patient returns to the clinic because of heavy bleeding, it is abnormal bleeding. Abnormal bleeding can be caused by localized inflammation, surgical trauma, gingival tears, and incisions that have not been sutured or improperly sutured. Abnormal bleeding can also be caused by excessive mouth rinsing, sucking on the extraction wound, excessive eating, and excessive exercise by the patient after the extraction.

2. Dry socket: a common complication of tooth extraction, most commonly seen after removal of mandibular wisdom teeth. Dry socket syndrome occurs 2~3 days after tooth extraction, and the main clinical manifestations are hollow alveolar fossa, bad odor, severe pain and can be radiated to the head and face.

3. Nerve injury: complex tooth extraction may cause nerve injury, the most common is the lower alveolar nerve injury during mandibular wisdom teeth extraction, the same side of the lower lip may have numbness, burning pain, itching or tingling.

4. Alveolar bone fracture: due to anatomical and pathological reasons, alveolar bone fracture can occur.
