After surgery for a fracture, you need to wait for the fracture to heal completely before removing the plate and nail (about 1~2 years). The complete healing of the fracture requires the completion of the remodeling period of the bone scab, which is about 1 to 2 years. At about 1-2 years, the new bone scabs have completed remodeling and shaping. It continues to remodel on the stress axis until it is histologically and radiographically untraceable. Therefore, the internal fixation device (plate and nail) can be removed about 1 to 2 years after fracture surgery. It is worth noting that after the plate has just been removed, it is also necessary to rest and refrain from weight bearing for a period of time. This will prevent the bone from becoming less stable when the plate is first removed, which may lead to a second fracture.
