There are fresh and dried dihuang. Fresh Dihuang has the effects of clearing heat and generating fluids, cooling blood and stopping bleeding (cooling and moisturizing the blood to prevent bleeding); dried Dihuang has the effects of clearing heat and cooling blood (relieving blood heat by clearing heat), and nourishing yin and generating fluids. Fresh Radix Rehmanniae is used in treating heat illnesses that injure yin, with tongue-redness and irritation of thirst, warm-heat spots (warm-heat toxins invading the body resulting in spots and plaques on the skin), vomiting of blood, epistaxis, and swelling of the throat and pain in the throat. Dried Radix Rehmanniae Sinensis is used in the treatment of heat entering the camp and blood, warm poisonous spots, vomiting of blood, epistaxis, heat illness injuring the yin, constipation due to injury of body fluid, sore throat and swelling. Di Huang should not be used if the spleen is deficient in dampness and stagnation, or if there is fullness in the abdomen and loose stools (thin and unformed stools). If there is a need to use this medicine, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor and should not be used blindly by oneself to avoid adverse effects.
