Tough solid masses in the subauricular region are mostly mixed tumors of the parotid gland mostly seen in young adults. The tumor is located below the earlobe and, in larger cases, extends into the neck. The tumor is hard and nodular, sometimes with a portion of it being cystic and interspersed with softer nodules. The tumor is not adherent to the skin or basal tissue and can be pushed; it grows slowly and may not change for several years or more than ten years. If malignancy occurs, the tumor often grows suddenly and rapidly, and is fixed by adhesion to surrounding tissues. Mixed tumors of parotid gland are mostly seen in middle age. It usually has no obvious conscious symptoms, grows slowly and can last for several years or even decades. The tumor appears as a firm, solid mass in the subauricular region with a nodular surface, clear borders, medium hardness, non-adherent to surrounding tissues, mobility and no pressure pain. If the tumor has one of the following conditions, it should be considered to have the possibility of malignant transformation. Sudden and rapid growth of the tumor; reduced mobility or even fixation; pain or ipsilateral facial paralysis, etc. It should be differentiated from auricular pseudocysts. Pseudocysts of the auricle (commonly known as auricular plasmacytochondritis) are confined cysts on the ventral side of the auricle of unknown origin, which are called pseudocysts because the cyst wall has no epithelial layer. Treatment of mixed tumors of the parotid gland is based on the principle of complete surgical excision. Preoperative biopsy is generally not indicated. The envelope of the tumor is often incomplete, and sometimes the tumor cells may invade the envelope or extra-envelope tissues, so if the resection is not complete, it will recur. Therefore, it is not advisable to remove the tumor by enucleation, but to remove the tumor together with the surrounding parotid tissue. During surgery, attention should be paid to maintain the facial nerve. If there is malignant change, it should be treated according to the treatment principle of malignant tumor.
