Swelling of the lower limbs in men may be caused by cardiogenic edema, nephrogenic edema, hepatic edema, sedentary standing, and hypoproteinemia. 1. Cardiogenic edema: it is mainly caused by heart failure and decreased pump function of the heart. Due to heart failure, part of the blood will remain in the peripheral veins, such as the veins of the lower limbs. Due to the increased pressure in the veins, water overflows into the tissues, resulting in edema. 2. Nephrogenic edema: It manifests as edema of the face and lower extremities and often occurs in diseases such as glomerulonephritis. Due to the decrease of glomerular filtration function, the protein content in blood and the decrease of blood’s ability to absorb water, water will penetrate into tissues and lead to edema. 3. Hepatogenic edema: it is common in patients with advanced cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and its principle of occurrence is similar to that of nephrogenic edema. 4. Prolonged standing and sitting: prolonged standing and sitting lead to obstruction of venous return in lower limbs, and then edema of lower limbs will occur. 5. Hypoproteinemia: the mechanism of edema caused by hypoproteinemia is due to the reduction of plasma protein, the effective osmotic pressure is reduced, so that a large amount of water stored in the tissues and cause edema symptoms. Avoiding long standing and sitting in daily life and doing more exercises for the foot muscles can prevent and eliminate leg swelling. Avoid wearing tight clothing, especially jeans that are too tight around the hips and thighs. Note to rest more and avoid overwork. Lower extremity venous return obstruction, drugs and other causes can also cause foot swelling, need to go to the hospital for treatment, find out the cause and targeted treatment.
