Metatarsal reconstruction is indeed one of the treatments for floating bunions, but there are certain disadvantages to the procedure. Because the bone is taken from the foot, there will be a more visible scar on the foot after the surgery. And whether it is free bone graft or anastomotic vascular bone graft, there is a certain chance of bone resorption and necrosis, which is difficult for parents to accept. Therefore, we are now using the hemipalmar bone graft reconstruction technique to reconstruct the first metacarpal bone from the baby’s second metacarpal bone, which will not cause scarring to other parts of the body and the chance of bone resorption and necrosis is greatly reduced. There are three prerequisites for a baby to undergo this procedure: 1) the child weighs 6 kg; 2) there are no other medical conditions; and 3) the metacarpal bone is the right width. This means that the baby is usually ready for hemimelia reconstruction between the ages of 6 months and 1 year. The earlier the baby’s thumb is reconstructed, the smoother the thumb function will be established and the better the baby’s own healing ability and post-operative results will be.
