How old are the adenoids?

Moderate adenoid hypertrophy is an indication for surgical curettage, but it should be performed in conjunction with clinical, or after conservative medical treatment has failed.
The degree of adenoid hypertrophy is graded according to the adenoid index, which is the ratio of the maximum thickness of the adenoid, A, to the width of the nasopharyngeal cavity, N, at the most convex part of the adenoid.
Children may have physiologic adenoid hypertrophy due to development, while the criteria vary slightly due to geographic, age, and individual differences. In normal children, the A/N ratio is less than or equal to 0.60, and when the A/N ratio is greater than 0.60, adenoid hypertrophy can be diagnosed, of which 0.60~0.66 is mild hypertrophy, 0.66~0.71 is moderate hypertrophy, and the A/N ratio is greater than or equal to 0.71 is moderate hypertrophy.
The main treatment for adenoid hypertrophy is surgery, but the adenoids are the body’s immune organs, both cellular and humoral immune function, should not be easily removed. Clinically, conservative treatment is advocated for patients with mild or moderate adenoid hypertrophy, while surgery is considered for those with severe or moderate adenoid hypertrophy that is not well treated by conservative treatment.
It is recommended to consult a professional doctor in the hospital and strictly grasp the indications for surgery.
