How to take care of stoma after rectal cancer surgery

The care methods of stoma after rectal cancer surgery are as follows: 1. Observe the blood flow of the intestinal stoma. The normal stoma color is lipstick, beef red or pink, with smooth and moist surface. If the color of stoma is pale, it may be due to low hematopoietic pigment; if the color of stoma is dark red and purple, it indicates early ischemia of stoma; if the stoma is completely black, it indicates ischemic necrosis of intestinal tube; if the stoma is swollen, shiny and translucent, it indicates edema of stoma, which can be gradually recovered in 6-8 weeks after surgery; 2. Keep the skin of stoma clean and wash it with warm water and saline. Use skin protective film around the skin to prevent fecal water or mucus from stimulating the skin to avoid inflammation, erosion, and peristoma dermatitis. Also observe the skin around the stoma for eczema, congestion, blisters, and breakage. 3. Instruct the patient and family members to use the stoma bag correctly and choose the appropriate bag according to the patient’s condition and the size of the stoma. The correct cut is recommended to be 1-2mm larger than the stoma, and the order of changing the stoma bag is from top to bottom, and the order of applying the stoma bag is from bottom to top.
