Can you gain weight during pregnancy with edema?

Generally, with edema during pregnancy, weight is gained.
Pregnant women gradually gain weight as the pregnancy progresses. Pregnant women with edema during pregnancy may gain more weight. The causes of edema during pregnancy are both physiologic and pathologic, but either cause of edema can lead to weight gain.
1. Physiological causes: the significant increase in venous pressure in the lower limbs during pregnancy, coupled with the compression of the inferior vena cava by the enlarged uterus, leads to an increase in the incidence of edema of the lower limbs, varicose veins and hemorrhoids. In addition, the dietary habits of some pregnant women, such as salty taste, may lead to sodium retention, causing edema.
2. Pathological causes: If the edema of the lower limbs of pregnant women is obvious and does not subside after rest, one should think of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, combined renal disorders or other comorbidities, and should consult the hospital in time to find out the cause of the disease and then give timely treatment.
