In case of functional dysphagia or obstructive dysphagia, we need to eat liquid or semi-liquid food that is nutritious and easy to digest according to the condition. In the case of paralytic dysphagia, solid foods are the mainstay. Functional dysphagia is mainly caused by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, and it is difficult to swallow solid food due to severe pain during eating. Obstructive dysphagia, on the other hand, is caused by narrowing of the pharyngeal cavity or esophagus for various reasons, so that solid food cannot go down, and only liquid food can be chosen. In contrast, paralytic dysphagia, caused by central or peripheral neuritis, is unable to swallow liquid food and easily causes choking and coughing, while solid food needs to be chosen.
