There are three main types of birthmarks.
Of these, brown and black birthmarks such as coffee spots and nevus of Ota are caused by pigmentation.
Most cases of red birthmarks are caused by vascular growths, such as nevus of bright redness.
There is also a type of birthmark that is a localised proliferation of some kind of tissue in the skin, such as an epidermal nevus.
