What is the cause of melanosis under the eye?

Under-eye melanosis is divided into congenital hyperpigmentation and secondary hyperpigmentation.
Congenital hyperpigmentation includes local pigmentation, pigment epithelial hypertrophy, pigmented nevi and benign choroidal melanoma.
Secondary hyperpigmentation is due to the free deposition of pigment from the destruction of pigment epithelium in the fundus and is seen in degenerative, inflammatory and traumatic fundus diseases of the eye.
