What are the effects and functions of alum

Alum has the effect of detoxifying and killing insects, stopping diarrhea and bleeding, and can be used for the treatment of scabies, itching, epistaxis and so on.
Alum is known as withered alum after being calcined, which is sour and astringent in flavor and cold in nature. It can be used externally to remove dampness, relieve itching, detoxify and kill insects. Internally, it can dispel wind and phlegm, stop diarrhea and bleeding. Alum can be used to treat scabies, itching, sores and eczema, hemorrhoids, prolonged diarrhea, epilepsy, epistaxis, hemorrhage (excessive menstrual flow or dripping), blood in stools and so on.
The adverse effects of alum are not clear. It is astringent in taste and overdose may easily lead to vomiting, and should be taken with caution by those with weak body and weak stomach.
