Can needles and moxibustion be used together?

The combination of needling and moxibustion is common in two clinical forms: the choice of warm acupuncture and moxibustion or moxibustion treatment after needling. Warm acupuncture and moxibustion is a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion for diseases that require both needle retention and moxibustion, where the needle is left at an appropriate depth after the needle has gained qi, and a section of moxa rolls about two centimeters long is threaded through the handle of the needle, with 1~3 strong each time for each acupuncture point, and then the needles are taken out after moxibustion has been applied. For example, in the treatment of constipation deficiency, warm needle moxibustion can be used on the main points as well as on the supporting points. Moxibustion can also be performed after the end of needling, usually by choosing suspended moxibustion, such as gentle moxibustion, sparrow pecking moxibustion, and gyratory moxibustion. For example, moxibustion can be used at the Shenque Guanyuan point when treating constipation and cold constipation. Acupuncture and moxibustion with treatment is commonly used for deficiency and cold disorders, and it is recommended to go to a specialized medical institution for treatment if any of the above symptoms occur.
