Causes and dangers of high total bile acids

High total bile acids may be caused by physiological reasons or diseases such as hepatitis, which may lead to liver failure and liver cancer if the original disease is not actively treated.

1. Physiological reasons: high total bile acid is sometimes a normal physiological metabolism, which mostly occurs after meals. After meals, bile acid is elevated, when the food is absorbed or digested, the high total bile acid will usually come down and will not cause harm to the body.

2. Hepatitis: total bile acid is a biochemical indicator reflecting liver function, if clinically found to be increased bile acid, will consider whether it is caused by systemic diseases of the liver, such as acute and chronic viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, drug-related liver injury and so on. These diseases can lead to a decrease in the liver’s ability to metabolize cholesterol, which can result in the accumulation of bile acids, causing increased bile acid levels.

If the above diseases cannot be cured and continue to damage liver function, lesions may occur, leading to liver failure and liver cancer.

Patients with high total bile acids need early treatment based on the test results.
