What does diverticulum mean?

A diverticulum is a gap in the intestinal wall that protrudes outward from the intestine and is called an intestinal diverticulum. Generally, intestinal diverticula are relatively small and have no clinical symptoms or are relatively mild. They do not require appropriate treatment or disposition and can be observed regularly. If they are relatively large, they can cause residual accumulation of food debris or feces, fecal water, etc., which can lead to inflammation of the intestinal tract resulting in abdominal pain, diarrhea and other symptoms. This situation requires anti-inflammatory and symptomatic treatment. If further aggravation causes perforation of the intestine, surgery will be required. Therefore, diverticula should be observed regularly to observe symptoms and colonoscopy.
