How long to treat Kawasaki disease in young children

Kawasaki disease in young children is a self-limiting disease, and most children have a good prognosis and need to be maintained on aspirin for six to eight weeks. In children without coronary artery disease, a complete physical examination is performed one, three, six months, and one to two years after discharge from the hospital; however, in untreated children, there is a 10 to 20 percent chance that coronary artery disease will occur. Therefore, long-term follow-up is needed to prevent the formation of thrombosis, and standardized treatment will take some time.
