Do you know about asthma in infants and children?

Infantile asthma refers to asthma in children under 3 years old, which accounts for a large proportion of childhood asthma attacks. Since the clinical manifestations of infantile asthma are mostly atypical compared with general childhood asthma, it is easy to be misdiagnosed or missed, thus affecting targeted treatment and leading to recurrent asthma attacks. So, what are the symptoms of asthma in infants and children? 1. Most of them have the precursor symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection induced asthma attack, i.e. 1-2 days of cold symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough, and the symptoms are heavier in the morning and after activities. Subsequently, wheezing occurs, and the number of attacks increases with age, mostly without fever. 2. Infants and children have cyanosis and nasal flaring during asthma attacks, and the prolongation of expiration is not as obvious as in older children. Some children have wheezing, but their general condition is still good, and their appetite and growth are not affected. However, some children have repeated coughing and wheezing, with more than 5-8 episodes per year, and are often misdiagnosed as bronchitis or pneumonia, requiring intravenous fluids or hospitalization, and sometimes the wheezing lasts for a long time, up to 2-4 weeks, and is difficult to control. 4.Commonly used asthma calming drugs are not effective in the treatment of infant asthma, and often require the application of inhaled corticosteroid therapy. 5. When diagnosing asthma in infants and children, special attention should be paid to family and personal history of atopic diseases. If there is asthma or allergic rhinitis in the family or if the child has a history of eczema, urticaria, food and drug allergies, the child’s chances of developing asthma increase significantly. 6.If early diagnosis of infant asthma can be made and regular and reasonable treatment is given in time, the condition of the child can be well controlled.
