Do you have to place a venous filter for fracture surgery?

If there is no risk of a blood clot dislodging at the time of fracture surgery, placement of a venous filter is usually not necessary. If the blood clot is dislodged or is active during surgery, an IV filter should be placed. The need to place an IV filter for fracture surgery is inextricably linked to the status of the blood clot. Generally speaking, if the blood clot is stable and not at risk of dislodging during surgery, an IV filter may not be needed and the progress of the condition needs to be closely monitored. However, when surgery is performed and compression results in dislodgement of the thrombus, venous filters need to be placed to avoid embolization. In some patients with fractures, the thrombus is already active prior to surgery, and venous filters should also be placed promptly. After fracture surgery, thrombolysis and anticoagulation should be actively performed under the guidance of healthcare professionals to avoid embolism.
