Ocular optic neuritis is an inflammatory, or degenerative, and demyelinating lesion of the optic nerve. Patients generally present with loss of vision in one or both eyes, eye pain, orbital pain, or pain with eye movement. The cause of optic neuritis is not fully understood and is considered to be related to infection and autoimmune disease. For the treatment of optic neuritis, if infection is considered, it is recommended that the patient be given anti-inflammatory treatment, which can be done with dexamethasone. If the patient is considered to have autoimmune optic neuritis, it is also recommended that the patient be treated with dexamethasone, as the acute phase can reduce the edema of the optic nerve, while the patient is given nerve-nourishing drugs, such as methylcobalamin, and can also be treated with acupuncture and physiotherapy in Chinese medicine.
