Indications for the Heimlich maneuver for stuck throat

The indications for the Hemlocke method are: patients with a foreign body in the respiratory tract that causes complete blockage or severe blockage of the respiratory tract, resulting in asphyxiation. Foreign bodies in the airway often occur in children and the elderly, after the production of foreign bodies in the respiratory tract, usually accompanied by paroxysmal violent cough, some patients appear cyanosis, irritability, dyspnea, etc. If the foreign body completely blocked the airway, the serious cases will die within five minutes due to lack of oxygen. At this time, the Heimlich maneuver can play an important role in saving lives. The principle of the Heimlich maneuver is that by violently impacting the patient’s upper abdomen for a short period of time, the abdominal pressure changes dramatically and the diaphragm rapidly rises, thus creating an upward and outward force in the airway to expel the foreign body from the airway. The Heimlich maneuver is usually practiced in adults in a standing position. The operator stands at the back of the patient, embraces the patient’s waist with both hands, and makes a fist, using the big fissure of the palm of the hand to the patient’s upper abdomen, giving an inward and upward impact force. However, if the patient is unconscious, the patient can be made to lie down and the same maneuver can be done. Complications can arise from the Heimlich maneuver, e.g., rib fractures, rupture of abdominal or thoracic viscera. Complete obstruction of the respiratory tract should also be checked for complications after the patient has been resuscitated using this method.
