The process of sleep monitoring When your doctor deems it necessary to perform a sleep monitoring test, he will select the appropriate level of sleep monitoring for you. It is generally divided into complex overnight polysomnography and primary sleep oxygen screening. Overnight polysomnography Overnight polysomnography requires you to sleep overnight in the hospital. Before the test, you should first make an appointment with the sleep technologist, inform the technologist of your sleep habits, and confirm the precautions to be taken before the test. On the day of the examination, please keep your usual routine, keep napping, do not nap, do not get too tired, do not get too hungry or too full, etc. Do not take stimulants or food or drugs with a sedative effect: coffee, strong tea, cola, tobacco and alcohol, etc. If you have been taking medication for a long time, please consult your doctor if you want to stop taking it. At night, half an hour before the appointment time at home or in the ward: no slippers, toothpaste, body wash and other toiletries for bathing in the ward. Do not apply hair and skin care products after bathing, and men should shave. Then change into your own loose pajamas and wait in the ward at the appointed time. For those who are assessed by the doctor to be in serious condition, older than 60 years old or younger than 18 years old, a family member is also required to accompany the examination. The sleep technologist will connect several leads to your body for monitoring before allowing you to sleep normally. You may feel slight discomfort during the test due to the leads, and some people may have trouble sleeping, but the test is painless and non-invasive. The preliminary report is usually available in the morning after the test, and you can come to the hospital during the working hours the next day after the test to pick up the official report. Sleep Oximetry Screening Sleep Oximetry Screening consists of two main items: sleep oxygen and heart rate. The advantages are that it is easier than overnight polysomnography, it hardly interferes with your sleep, and it is suitable for screening patients suspected of having snoring. If, after screening, the results show that the sleep oxygen status does not reach normal levels, and the doctor assesses that it is necessary to continue to improve the overnight polysomnography to understand the condition in more detail, further improvement of the overnight polysomnography is required.
