Science | Psychological self-response for people in residential isolation

In the face of the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, excessive pessimism will not help. Those who are isolated at home should actively adjust their mindset and adopt positive coping strategies, on the one hand, closely monitor their health condition and seek medical attention when necessary, and on the other hand, use scientific isolation to protect their families and people around them, so as to make a positive contribution to the early mitigation of the epidemic. When bad emotions come, tell yourself to stop and avoid dwelling on them, otherwise you will be caught in a negative cognitive and emotional cycle that is difficult to overcome. Human psychological defenses include a variety of ways to cope. Fear and dread prompt us to run away from difficulties, but excessive fear and dread are not conducive to problem solving. Instead of repeatedly thinking about how unlucky they are, they should think about the fact that they are still under observation and have the ability to protect themselves and others, and that even if they are unfortunate enough to be infected, they have a great possibility of being cured. Academician Zhong Nanshan, a highly respected senior, mentioned, “We should take the initiative to use the Chinese New Year to fight the epidemic, seven days off for the Chinese New Year, no walking, no New Year visits, each home isolation, using text messages and phone calls, the incubation period is about seven to fourteen days, the epidemic can be greatly controlled! Change unfavorable to favorable!” Although you are not a front-line soldier in white, you have contributed to the fight against the epidemic through your own home isolation! 2. Home isolators should have a scientific understanding of the epidemic and not believe in rumors. The epidemic is developing rapidly, but the national emergency response is also rapid. Receiving a lot of information on the Internet is not only not conducive to the mental regulation of isolators, but can affect their mental balance by receiving too much information. Therefore, home isolates should first avoid receiving excessive information on the Internet. The belief in the strong scientific and medical capabilities of the motherland and the belief in overcoming the virus will be very beneficial to the emotional regulation during home observation. 3. Understand the relationship between emotions and somatic symptoms When people are under great stress, bad emotions will often be transformed into somatic symptoms, or what we often call “somatization symptoms”, which often include physical pain, dizziness, weakness, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, fatigue and so on. In the case of home isolation, the above symptoms are most likely due to psychological stress. Therefore, actively regulating the mind will reduce the physical symptoms on the one hand, and help to improve the immune system to fight against the virus on the other hand. 4. Daily behavioral strategies for home isolates 1) Maintain a regular and healthy routine Mental health is inseparable from physical health, regular routine, healthy diet, and appropriate physical exercise are conducive to physical and mental health. (2) The home process should enrich the mental world and divert attention Without going out, treat isolation as a short vacation. For example, read books, watch movies (avoid negative genres), play small games that do not require the brain, exercise indoors (calisthenics, relaxation meditation, yoga, etc.), take a bath, do housework, chat on the Internet, etc. People in home isolation should face their situation, accept their occasional bad moods and actively adjust to them, work and rest normally, live a regular life, and actively cope with life during isolation.
