Diffuse toxic thyroid, how to treat

Diffuse toxic goiter, also known as Graves’ disease, is an autoimmune disease whose clinical manifestations are not limited to the thyroid gland but are a multisystemic syndrome. At this stage, the treatments for diffuse goiter are drug therapy, iodine-131 therapy and surgery.
1. Drug therapy: Toxic diffuse goiter is primary hyperthyroidism, if the symptoms are mild, anti-hyperthyroidism drugs can be utilized for treatment, commonly used drugs are methimazole, propylthiouracil and so on.
2. Isotope therapy: Isotope therapy is iodine-131 therapy, the main mechanism is to inhibit the production of thyroid hormones, to achieve the effect of treatment of hyperthyroidism.
3. Surgery: If the effect of medication and isotope therapy is not good, or the swelling is obvious, recurrence after medication, pressure symptoms or combined with thyroid cancer, then surgical resection of the thyroid gland should be considered.
